What Are Dentures?
Dentures are custom-made, removable dental appliances consists of a pink base that resembles the gingiva and a set of teeth attached to this base.
They are designed to replace multiple missing teeth, as well as the surrounding gum tissue, supporting your facial muscles and lips, and maintaining your facial contour. They are usually made of acrylic resin, sometimes combined with metal, or reinforced with ceramics.
Your dentist, with the help of a skilled dental technician, will do their best to give you a denture that resembles your natural teeth and gums.
Types of Dentures
At Suave Dental Clinic, we offer many types of dentures to meet everyone’s needs and desires. Here are the common types:
According to the area coverage of the denture and the number of teeth :
Complete Denture ( Full Dentures )
A complete denture is recommended when the patient loses all their dentition in either the upper or lower jaw. It will restore the patient’s ability to eat, speak, and also improve their facial appearance by supporting lips and cheeks.
It covers all the upper and lower ridges and replaces the full dentition with a full set of teeth that replaces 16 teeth (4 incisors + 2 canines + 4 premolars + 4 molars) in each jaw.

Removable Partial Denture
It is a custom-made removable dental appliance that replaces multiple missing teeth. The components of the partial denture that are retained in the patient’s mouth are the metal clasps that are attached to the natural remaining teeth to provide stability and retention. These clasps can be easily unclipped when the patient needs to remove the denture. The number of teeth varies between patients, according to how many teeth the patient has had extracted.

According to the material of fabrication:
Acrylic denture base and teeth
A denture is completely fabricated from resin (PMMA), a biocompatible plastic-like material, which is lightweight and easily fabricated and maintained with a low cost. The base is made of a pink gingival-like resin, and the set of teeth is also made of white resin with multiple shades like the natural teeth. An acrylic denture is affordable for someone with a low budget, but it’s only used as a temporary or a transient denture because of its very short lifespan.

Acrylic denture teeth with metallic base
A denture base is made of a metal framework (usually titanium mesh) that supports the acrylic base and lowers the chance of its breakage. This makes the denture a little heavier but more stable in the patient’s mouth while eating, chewing, and speaking daily.

Flexible denture
A more resilient and flexible denture base, made of flexible thermoplastic resin. It’s only used in partial dentures because it doesn’t retain to the neighboring teeth with metal clasps like a conventional rigid acrylic denture; instead, it surrounds the neighboring teeth with a resin extension of the same tooth color.
Unlike rigid acrylic dentures, it’s much softer, less likely to cause gingival irritation, and harder to maintain.

Hybrid dentures
Ceramic-reinforced acrylic dentures are called hybrid dentures, where PMMA resin is modified with ceramic nanoparticles, giving more upgraded features like hardness, wear resistance, high strength, and aesthetic light-reflection properties that resemble natural teeth.
Hybrid dentures are more commonly used with all-on-4 dental implants for fixed denture use; they are either cemented or screwed to dental implants, as they can’t rely on the ridge retention and the physical properties of saliva like in a conventional denture.

According to the means of retention:
Full tissue-supported denture
It’s for conventional complete denture which it restoring a full set of teeth and rests completely on the ridge. The complete denture gains retention through resting on an adequate volume of bone, and the acrylic base should extend to the full gingival length. That’s why it’s much more liable to dislodge, flip, and rock from the mouth during functioning after jawbone resorption has taken place.
That’s why patients with complete dentures use denture adhesive to stay in place while eating.

Tissue and teeth-supported denture
It’s when the partial denture rests on the ridge, and the metal clasps and resin extensions hug the neighboring teeth. This makes the denture less likely to rock or dislodge during chewing and eating, according to the number of surrounding teeth

Implant-supported Overdenture
Implant-supported overdentures are removable dentures with means of retention such as a titanium bar, balls, or locators. A patient snaps the denture in and out. These means of retention make the denture more stable and less likely to rock on chewing, eating, and speaking. An overdenture can be placed on remaining roots or 2 dental implants; this makes it one of the affordable dental implants that are used for full-mouth reconstruction with a removable appliance.

Implant-retained denture
For patients who need a more natural and comfortable full-mouth implant. Implant-supported dentures are a fixed, non-removable solution that can only be removed by the dentist. It’s securely fixed to multiple dental implants placed on the ridge. Dentists typically use 4,6,8 dental implants per arch. The dental implants are strategically placed through the ridge for more force distribution. This option provides superior stability and retention. In addition, to bone preservation for decades without any resorption.

According to Duration of Fabrication:
Immediate denture
Another type of denture which is directly placed after tooth extraction without waiting for tissue healing. It’s often used as a temporary or a transient appliance until the final restoration is ready to wear, whether it’s fixed like a dental bridge or hybrid dentures, or removable denture.
However, the disadvantage of this type is that bones and gum tissues are going to shrink during healing time; therefore, the denture will require adjustments and relining to fit properly on the gum after healing.

Conventional denture
It’s the regular denture procedure that takes place after a period of bone and gingival healing in the place of tooth extraction, and after the healing of bone augmentation in case of a patient with severe bone resorption who has a soft, flappy ridge, with no adequate bone volume to receive any dental restoration.

Conventional VS Immediate Denture
In the case of the conventional denture, the gum has taken its time to complete healing and will be ready for the denture to fit properly.
Unlike the conventional type, with immediate dentures, the patient will not have to stay without teeth during the healing time.
Now, when deciding between the two types, it may seem that an immediate complete denture is the best choice for you; however, the disadvantage of this type is that bones and gum tissues are going to shrink during healing time; therefore, the denture will require adjustments to fit properly on the gum after healing.
For this reason, an immediate denture may be considered a temporary solution until the conventional one can be used.
The alveolar ridge and gums play the main role in the retention and stability of the complete denture; in cases where bone resorption is detected, additional procedures such as implants or bone grafting may be necessary to enhance both retention and stability, improving the function of the denture.
Benefits of dentures
Dentures are one of the most important prosthetic appliances in dentistry. Despite the availability of more advanced alternatives, they remain, in some cases, the optimal and perhaps the only suitable choice to bring life back to your oral cavity.
- More cost-effective treatment than fixed restorations;
Patients who have multiple missing teeth or even no teeth remaining in their mouth can get dentures of all types at an affordable, lower price compared to other options. - Dentures help restore essential oral functions, such as chewing, which is beneficial and provides better food absorption. This improves the quality of life.
- Restoring speech ability, they enable individuals to speak clearly and correctly once again.
- Dentures significantly improve facial appearance; After tooth loss, A patient may appear older than they actually are; they support the facial muscles and lips, effectively restoring a youthful look and turning back the clock for the patient. Also, they restore the patient’s natural smile, boosting their self-confidence.
- Brain health improvement, beyond function and aesthetic benefits. Dentures play a crucial role in overall health improvement. Recent studies show a direct connection between tooth loss replacement and decreased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
- Keep your remaining teeth in their place by using a partial denture, which plays a significant role in maintaining the health of the remaining natural teeth. Its presence helps ensure that the natural teeth stay in their proper position and prevents them from shifting out of place.
- A choice like an implant-supported removable denture combines two important features. Affordability is combined with superior stability and retention. These previously mentioned features make it a life-changing experience.

How Long Do Dentures Last?
Generally, the average lifespan of dentures is around 3 to 7 years. However, Several factors affect the longevity of the dentures, such as the material they are made from, how well the patient cares for them, and how often they are worn.
Drawbacks of Dentures:
Do dentures have side effects?
Despite the significant importance and great benefits of dentures, they cannot be considered a magical solution to all tooth loss problems. There are some disadvantages, which can be summarized as follows:
- Dentures are less stable and less comfortable compared to fixed prosthetics or dental implants.
- Dentures do not stimulate the jawbone like natural teeth or dental implants. Therefore, dentures will not prevent bone resorption over time.
- As a result, bone resorption and the changes that occur in the gums over time affect the fit and stability of the denture, making it necessary for regular adjustments, relining, or even a complete replacement.
- Because dentures cover the gums and, for the upper denture, much or all of the palate, they reduce taste sensation and the ability to feel the temperature of foods and drinks, which may lead to burns.
- Dentures are fragile and need much care, as they may crack or break down if dropped.
- The chewing force with dentures is obviously not the same as with natural teeth or implants. It can be difficult to eat hard or sticky foods even with well-fitted dentures. Patients may also need some time to adjust to eating properly when using dentures for the first time.
- When a patient first uses dentures, they may find it difficult to speak naturally, and the denture may slip out while talking. With time and practice, the patient will get used to speaking comfortably with the denture.
- Dentures require proper care and regular cleaning. The patient needs to remove and clean them daily to avoid bacteria or fungi buildup, which could lead to oral infections or bad breath.
- Some people may experience gag reflexes, especially when using upper dentures.
- In the beginning, the patient may experience discomfort, soreness, or irritation in the gums. In rare cases, some patients may have an allergy to the materials used in the denture, such as acrylic or metal.
Most of these disadvantages can be avoided if we are aware of what to expect when first using dentures, the proper ways to handle them, and how to maintain their cleanliness. This is what we will learn in denture aftercare.

Dentures FAQs
Are Dentures Fixed Or Removable?
Dentures are custom-made removable dental appliances, designed to replace a missing tooth or multiple teeth. Patients can easily remove them at any time, such as overnight or when they need to clean them. However, people are mistakenly calling the dental bridge a fixed partial denture.
Is It Painful To Get A Denture?
Having a denture shouldn’t be painful; however, you may feel some discomfort when you first start using it. This is common and normal, and you will adjust to it over time. The adjustment period varies from person to person, depending on their oral anatomy and how quickly they adapt to new changes. If you experience any pain or persistent irritation, do not let these signs go unnoticed and seek immediate consultation with your dentist, because your denture may just need minor adjustments to eliminate pressure points and ensure that it fits properly.
Will My Dentures Need To Be Replaced?
Yes, dentures are subject to replacement. Over time, due to changing conditions in your mouth (such as bone resorption) combined with the wear and tear of your dentures, they may no longer fit properly. Regular dental check-ups can help determine when a replacement might be necessary.
What If The Dentures Break?
If your dentures break, you should immediately see your dentist. Depending on the extent of the damage, your dentist may repair them in their clinic, send them to a dental laboratory for more extensive repairs, or they might need to be replaced. Avoid attempting to fix them yourself or using regular glue, as that can cause further damage or change how they fit. Breakage of dentures can be prevented by regular proper maintenance and careful handling.
Is It Better To Get A Bridge Or A Partial Denture?
When a patient still has remaining natural teeth, a fixed bridge could be an alternative treatment to a partial denture. So to decide your dentist will examine your oral cavity, assess your case, and determine whether a partial denture or a fixed dental bridge is a better option for you.Regardless of the cost difference (fixed prosthetics are, of course, more expensive than partial dentures), if fixed prosthetics are an option for you, choose them without hesitation. Despite the drawbacks of partial dentures, they remain one of the most important solutions for replacing missing teeth. In many cases, they are the best option to restore function and improve quality of life.
