Composite vs Porcelain Veneers

composite vs porcelain veneers at Suave Clinic

Dental veneers consist of thin layers, crafted from materials like porcelain, zirconia, or composite resin, that are applied to the front surface of your teeth. These veneers enhance the color, shape, or size of your teeth.

Suave Clinic delivers customized solutions that seamlessly merge aesthetics, durability, and precision, ensuring your smile looks natural and radiant.

What are composite veneers?

Direct composite veneers are created using a thin layer of a tooth-colored composite bonding restoration that is applied, bonded, and shaped directly on your teeth (direct veneers) in the same dental appointment. The preparation process is quick and requires minimal removal of the tooth surface, making the procedure minimally invasive.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are made from Lithium Disilicate or Feldspathic porcelain, and are considered all-ceramic restorations, which are more commonly used in dental cosmetics, especially E-max veneers.

Unlike Zirconia veneers, which are also one of the ceramic restorations, but don’t fall under the porcelain veneers category, as they’re made of Zirconium Dioxide.

Emax porcelain veneers are renowned for their exceptional light reflection and high translucency, resulting in a natural tooth color tone, while also providing strong durability and biocompatibility.

Composite vs. Porcelain Veneers: Pros and Cons

Choosing between those two types of dental veneers may be a little confusing. It is a good idea to think about which one suits you best.
Although any kind of veneers can make a quick improvement in your teeth’s appearance, like snap-on veneers, they vary in their durability, cost, and aesthetics.

At Suave Clinic, our skilled dentists will guide you through each option, helping you make a decision that brings the best results for your smile.

Composite vs. Porcelain Veneers

Here are the key differences to choose between Composite and Porcelain Veneer

  1. Aesthetics and appearance
Composite Veneers: A good choice for minor corrections. They can look natural, but the resin material tends to be more opaque and lacks the deep, light-reflecting “glow” of natural teeth. They can appear slightly flatter or dull in bright light compared to porcelain.
Porcelain Veneers are the gold standard for aesthetics. Because porcelain is a glass-ceramic, like Emax veneers, it mimics the light-handling properties of natural enamel perfectly. It allows light to pass through the surface and scatter (translucency), creating a depth and vitality that is indistinguishable from a natural tooth.
  2. 2. Durability
Composite veneers may be slightly more vulnerable to minor damage, but they have a strong chemical bond to the tooth structure (retention). Although they are not so strong under mastication forces, they are better placed in low-stress bearing areas like front teeth.
Porcelain veneers offer superior strength and durability and are less prone to wear with time.
  3. Longevity
Composite veneers can last for 4 to 8 years when properly maintained, whereas Porcelain veneers generally have a longer life span, usually lasting 10 to 15 years or even longer.
  4. Material & Fabrication
Composite veneers are made of tooth-colored nano-hybrid resin material. This is layered directly onto the tooth in thepatient’s mouth.
Porcelain veneers are individually made of pure feldspathic porcelain fabricated manually by the artistic lab technicians, or lithium disilicate like Emax veneers, which are fabricated by CAD/CAM technology.
  5. Removability /Reversibility
In most instances, composite veneers require minimal enamel preparation according to the depth of discoloration. Porcelain veneers like Emax need at least 0.3mm – 0.5mm enamel removal, which is why teeth preparation for composite or porcelain veneers is irreversible.
On the other hand, Dental Lumineers, which are feldspathic porcelain, are called no-prep veneers, as they can be cemented to the enamel tooth structure directly, and are reversible without harming the tooth structure.

  1. Resistance to Stains
Composite veneers are likely to stain over time and may require polishing or even replacement because of the porous resin with absorb stains. On the other hand, porcelain veneers are very resistant to discoloration and stains from any colored beverages such as coffee, tea, soda, and tobacco.
  2. Repairability After Damage
Composite veneers are more affordable to repair if chipped or broken; in contrast, porcelain veneers can’t be patched with a filling and need to be refabricated rather than repaired.
  3. Number of Appointments
Composite veneers can usually be completed in just one visit. Porcelain veneers typically require two or more appointments for preparation, fabrication, and delivery.
  4. Cost
Composite veneer prices are more budget-friendly. Porcelain veneers are a higher investment due to materials and lab work.
  5. Feasibility
Both can be used for full mouth veneers from the second upper left premolar tooth to the left one. However, full-mouth composite veneers are not as feasible as they seem. It requires special tools like dental floss, dental clamps, and a heavy rubber dam,  and it takes a long chair-side session, maybe exceeding 2 hours, which is exhausting. On the otherhand, full mouth rehabilitation with porcelain veneers is the most convenient treatment option for a Hollywood smile makeover, which requires teeth preparation, digital Impression taking, and then sending the impression to the lab for fabrication, the chairside-time maybe 30-60 minutes.

Composite and porcelain veneers cost comparison

Porcelain veneers, like E-max veneers, are extremely durable, resistant to stains, and have a natural look. The price range for these varieties typically lies between €240 – €450 per tooth.
Composite veneers cost is much lower because porcelain veneers are meant to last for a period of 10 to 15 years, possibly even longer if properly maintained, when compared with composite ones.
Composite veneers are more affordable, making them a popular choice for patients seeking a quick smile enhancement on a budget.

How to care for your composite and porcelain veneers

Veneers require more subsequent care to maintain their appearance and durability. Proper maintenance could include:

  • Oral care routine
Good daily oral hygiene is very important for maintaining any dental restoration, including composite and porcelain veneers.
You need to brush your veneers with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste, which will protect them from damage.
Flossing around the veneers daily will keep your gums healthy and prevent recession around the veneers.
  • Be Careful with Your Bite
Although veneers are strong, they are prone to fracture. Avoid biting hard objects or using your teeth as tools. Limit hard foods such as ice or hard candy. Use a night guard if you have a habit of grinding your teeth.
  • Regular Visits to Your Dentist
While home care is very important, professional maintenance ensures long-term success. Regular dental check-ups, ideally every six months, enable your dentist to polish your veneers and evaluate their condition, whether they need repair or replacement.
